It was something specific enough that it sound trustworthy. The guy on the phone said some information regarding my account that made it seem like he actually knew my account. It’s been 5 months since graduation and I’ve had so little luck getting a job. Which for a broke ass college student was an extra insane amount of money to have. I tried to contact Zelle directly at the very least to complain and they disconnected me from the line every time before I could talk to someone. I even contacted law enforcement at the recommendation of the bank but there’s like no info and it’s just some money so they didn’t even respond to me. It’s the only time I’ve ever felt like a Karen but I felt justified doing so. I even found the law that I thought would cover my situation but they said it didn’t and wouldn’t let me escalate the situation further. I realized it was a scam and tried to rectify the situation with my bank but they refused. Well a long weekend later it hadn’t come back. He then said it would probably take a couple days because it would have to be processed out then back in. So I used my own phone number and sent the money to, what I thought was, myself. He said that to fix the situation I would have to send the same amount in payments to myself through Zelle. Guy on the other side called claiming to be the like fraud department or something and asked if I had transferred a large sum of money in 3 separate payments to Name in State (can’t remember exactly what) using Zelle. Yes I was kinda dumb but also it was a very well done scam and I didn’t even know scams like this existed or could happen so I wasn’t even on the look out for this type of thing.Īnyway, I got a call from a number that showed up as Wells Fargo (my bank). It’s been almost a year so details are a little vague. Alongside infomercials, and kids/young adult apps. Commercials for it were on tv late at night. Why would I involve a 3rd party - risking more data data breaches?Īnyways, I just never got a good vibe from zelle when they started. If I’m sending more money than that? I’ll just do a bank transfer. That would be expensive.Īs for the fees? If I’m sending a hundred bucks, and the fee is $1.50? I’m fine with that. I doubt Zelle’s security is highly and regularly audited, maybe it was done - a while ago - when incorporated into a new banks app. Scanning our email to target ads to us better. I’m just going to assume they market people’s data to advertisers - like many other companies do. I mentioned to someone else, if Zelle doesn’t have fees, how are they making money? It’s not a non-profit. But it’s not like these banks (even mine) created Zelle, they’re just a partnership to provide the service to make money. There’s always gonna be scammers and what not.
